fiber prevents breast cancer

What does a high-fiber diet have to do with breast cancer? More than we thought.

In a recent study (Dec 15 2008, Journal of Clinical Oncology) researchers found high-fiber diets reduced recurrence of breast cancer by 31 percent in women with high estrogen levels. In the study, almost 3,000 breast cancer survivors were assigned to either a high-fiber diet (8 fruit and vegetable servings/day, plus 16 oz of vegetable juice), or a comparison diet of just five servings of fruit and vegetables/day.

Yes, fruits and vegetables help prevent cancer and recurrence of cancer as this study shows - even in women with higher-than-normal estrogen levels. If what we eat makes this significant of a difference, why are doctors prescribing drugs as if there were no other choice?

That's not surprising to me, but try to ask any mainstream doctor about how diet can affect diseases, and he or she will most likely not know (and not care)!! Fortunately, I have a doctor who knows some things about nutrition (he is a vegetarian himself). We need more real nutrition education in the medical field and less "paid-for" information from pharmaceutical companies. Thanks for the post!

    Hi Bronwyn,
I have quit asking myself that question as it is puzzling to say the least. Those doctors are smart people and if we can figure it out, why aren't they doing the figuring too?

Honestly, I'm really glad I got to hear you speak and learn about your blog site! It makes a lot of sense and has inspired me to make a few changes this year! (I have about 170 pounds to lose so wish me luck! lol)

It does amaze me how un-enlightened doctors can be. I had a doctor appointment yesterday (for this chronic outer ear infection I've been having) and mentioned that I was going to start a new diet (just an fyi in case he had any enlightening words or wanted to watch any health issues.) He perked up and started pushing his "medical weight loss" program. I've tried a few of his "programs" in the past and I can't ever stick to them more than a couple weeks! The first one was high protein and low carb. I craved fruit soooo bad but wasn't allowed any! Instead I was drowned in iceberg lettuce which I couldn't stand! I begged for anything other than iceberg and he acted like nothing else would work.. lol.. and then 2 weeks into it I got painfully constipated and I could barely pick my head up off my desk at work. i was miserable so I quit! Of course doc made it sound like I was the only one who couldn't do it. His next "program" involved having shakes for breakfast and lunch - GROSS! No thank you... so not only was it expensive, it was ineffective. So this year I won't get sucked into that. I'm going to enjoy my fruits, learn to like new veggies and explore the world of grains and beans. (Only recently did I find out I liked Quinoa, Cous Cous, Eggplant, Avocados, etc... lol) So thank you for providing a new and refreshing "plan" that doesn't sound impossible. And not only do I hope to lose weight, I expect I'll feel better than EVER! (I did go vegetarian for a month last year as an experiment and was amazed at how I felt! I even lost 15 pounds in that month without really trying! But then the holidays hit! lol So time to start the new year right!)

So THANK YOU! Keep up the blogs!!!
