is it just me?
Published by Bronwyn Schweigerdt on June 30, 2008 at 8:46 PMAccording to an article published in ScienceDaily (May 23, 2007), commercially raised meats and dairy products carry antibiotic-resistant bacteria:
In a study published last year, researchers tested a variety of ready-to-eat food samples including seafood, meats, dairy, deli items and fresh produce purchased from several grocery chain stores. With the exception of processed cheese and yogurt, antibiotic-resistance gene-carrying bacteria were found in many food samples examined.
I know most of you have heard this before, but in the context of what I've been writing on (dysbiosis & Leaky Gut), I see the dangers of antibiotics in our food supply in a new light. So yes, they're leading to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but these microbes are also wiping out the beneficial intestinal flora of our gut, increasing "intestinal permeability", which leads to all these autoimmune disorders and food intolerances.
And think about it, if these bacteria are resistant to antibiotics, you can bet they're resistant to our own body's natural antibodies - which means they can do more damage than your average bacteria.
I'm sorry, I just don't understand why we the American consumers are still eating commercially produced meat and dairy. And I'm not even mentioning the steriod hormones given to livestock.
Labels: antibiotics

Bronwyn:
I don't get it either! I read your blog--faithfully, and, with each passing day, I take your advice. I can't tell you, how amazing I feel, going completely vegan. My entire life has changed, as my mind, body, and spirit seem well connected.
I remember, when I was still eating meat--and processed meat, I felt horrible. Not just my body--the constipation-just the overall feelings of tension.
Funny story about being vegan:
So, I'm at this swim party yesterday, and it's pretty well known I don't eat meat, and one of my husbands friends is chowing down on some Taco Bell. So, I walk in the kitchen, and notice his toe is up in the air, over on top of the table. I say, "Hey, Howie, how are you?" He says, chowing down on his taco, "Not doing so good, I've got gout in my big toe." Now, he slams down a beer, and the rest of his taco.
I shake my head--I really just shake it. I can't say a darn thing--DARN! I really can't. His doctors have convinced him that his condition is genetic, and have him a list of pain meds. He's just 40 years old.
I sat back in my chair and ate some grapes and granola-I want so badly for everyone to have your blog, and I want everyone to understand it.
Thanks for all your hard work. And thanks for chaning my household in a major way--
Rose C.
